A special investigation team (SIT) of policemen probing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s road repair work scam arrested four more men employed with road contractors, on Saturday night.

This comes in after the arrest of ten third-party auditors for cheating in road repair work three days ago.

The total number of arrests made in connection with the scam has touched 14 now. The four men were arrested during a police investigation following the BMC’s FIR with Azad Maidan Police in April, regarding malpractices in road repairs.

The accused have been identified as Sanjay Singh (37), who works with J. Kumar-K.R. Constructions, Sunil Chavan (28), who works with Relcon-R.K. Madani contractors, Sandeep Jadhav, who works with RPS-K.R Constructions, and Santhanavel Velmani (23) who works with R.K Madani. They will remain in police custody till June 21.

Confirming the arrests, Manoj Sharma, DCP of zone I said, “These men have been booked on charges of cheating and forgery. They used to sign all road repair work documents on behalf of the respective contractor companies.” The police will arrest other contractor firms’ workers in the coming week, Mr Sharma said.

Refusing to disclose the contents of the police inquiry report, he said, “We found several irregularities in the road works. The work was not up to the mark. More arrests will be made in the following week.”
