Four accused in the Ambernath corporator murder case have been arrested by Titwala police and handed over to Ambernath police on Monday evening.

Four accused in the Ambernath corporator murder case have been arrested by Titwala police and handed over to Ambernath police on Monday evening. Ulhasnagar court has sent them to police custody till January 7.

The four including Deepak Kalambe, Vishal Zaveri, Sandip Gaikar and Sachin Chavhan are all in their twenties. One of them had a family issue with corporator Gunjal (45 at the time of death) which is why they took such an extreme step.

Sources said, “Gunjal had beaten up the parents of one of the accused. The accused was 15 at that time and could not do anything to save his parents. Mr Gunjal had beaten them so badly that they were serious for many months. Now the accused was grown up and with the help of his three friends, decided to kill Gunjal to take revenge.”

According to a police officer from Ambernath police station, the incident occurred between 9 am and 9.30 am on Friday on the road in front of Moravali Municipal School. “Gunjal went to a salon for a shave on his motorcycle. He was returning home went unknown assailants attacked him with sharp weapons and escaped from the scene,” said a police officer from Ambernath police station.

The officer said that Gunjal had a business where he used to look after civil and labour work for MIDC in Ambernath. Due to his strong political background, he had too many rivals which is why he always had private bodyguards with him. On Friday however, he went to the salon on his motorcycle.

DCP Vasant Jadhav said, “The Titwala police handed over the four accused to us. We are investigating the matter and the motive behind the murder. The accused are looking happy and they don’t have any regret about what they have done. We still don’t know the real reason behind it. We are working on it.”
