A 35-year-old homemaker lost her life on Saturday allegedly due to Thane municipal corporation’s negligence when a footpath caved in and she fell into the crater.

Thane Nagar police officials have registered a case of death due to negligence against contractors and the municipal corporation.

The deceased, identified as Jameela Shaikh, is a resident of Kranti Nagar Rabodi. According to police officials, Jameela went for dinner at her relative’s place at Uthalsar on Saturday evening. She was accompanied by her four nieces, her daughter and father-in-law. When they were going back home to Rabodi at around 9 pm in an rickshaw, the rickshaw was unstable so she decided to get down and walk home.

Victim’s nephew Mozzain Shaikh said, “My aunt took my sister who is 12-year- old and decided to walk home. While they were near Thane central jail footpath, suddenly she lost balance and the footpath slab collapsed. My aunt left my niece’s hand and pushed her away when she went down the hole. My sister immediately called people nearby. We reached the

spot within five minutes. We called the fire brigade but they reached the spot after 30 minutes and after that they started rescue operation. In my aunt’s postmortem report it states that she died because of suffocation. It is all because of the municipal corporation people who didn’t construct footpath properly and fire brigade who didn’t reach the spot on time.” The police has registered a case against the fire brigade, municipal corporation and contractors over the incident.
