The Powai police, probing the alleged kidney racket at the LH Hiranandani Hospital, is now awaiting reports from the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) on a few other transplants conducted at the same hospital earlier.
Having busted the racket in July, the Powai police recently submitted details of three other transplants conducted at the hospital to the DHS panel, set up to probe the case. A police source confirmed that three transplant operations conducted earlier this year were also under the scanner.
“We had sent the details of the three transplants to the DHS officials, before they submitted the report about the transplant which is already being investigated. We had found records of the three transplants while going through documents collected from the hospital,” said an officer. “As some of the documents submitted for these transplants seemed suspicious, we sent them to the DHS, so they could include them in their probe.”
The police source said the DHS had not included any findings about the additional transplants. “They have informed us that they are studying the said transplants and will submit reports regarding them in the coming days,” he said. Of the three transplants, one was conducted in April. A man from rural Maharashtra had received a kidney and the police suspect that some of the documents submitted in the case were forged.
According to investigators, the panel will check if any of the arrested five doctors were also involved in the three earlier transplants. “The DHS will in its probe try to determine whether the five arrested doctors were negligent in anyway at the time of these transplants too,” he said.
He added that based on the findings of the DHS, they might even register fresh FIRs for the said transplants. “We will take a decision on the same based on what the DHS probe reveals,” he said.
The five arrested doctors, including CEO of Hiranandani hospital Dr Sujit Chatterjee and medical director Anurag Naik, are set for a bail hearing on Tuesday.
