For the first time in the history of the University of Mumbai, the three governing bodies, namely the academic and management council and senate, will convene on the same day to approve the perspective plan for the year 2015-16. The meetings of the ad-hoc bodies have been made possible after the chancellor Vidyasagar Rao gave his permission to conduct the emergency senate meeting on November 19 even though his permission was sought only on November 18.
According to the letter issued by Raj Bhavan to the university, the chancellor has given his approval to the senate as per the norms laid down in section 24 (4) of the Universities Act of 1977. Confirming the same Dr M A Khan, registrar, MU said, “We got the permission on Wednesday afternoon and have sent out the invitations to the senate members. The meeting will be held on Thursday 3 pm at the Convocation Hall to decide and approve the perspective plan,” said Dr Khan.
In the absence of elected governing bodies ad hoc bodies were set up, wherein the academic council consists of 40 heads of departments, seven management council members and 17 senate members. The academic and management council will meet in the morning and approve the perspective plan for the year 2015-16, after which the senate will be held at 3 pm. According to senior university officials, a meeting of all governing bodies on the same day was unheard of in the past.
