Three persons, including a four-year-old boy, died in Jogeshwari on Friday when they were hit by a fast train heading towards Virar. The deceased were trespassing on the tracks.
The dead have been identified as husband and wife Santosh Suresh Tadasam (40) and his wife Renuka Najeer (35) and the four-year-old nephew of Renuka, Anshu Kolhe. Tadasam’s own son, seven-year-old Madalo, escaped by a whisker as he saw the train shuttling towards them and hit his parents.
“Before I realised what was happening or could call out to them to stop, the train hit them, it happened too fast,” he said.
The Tadasams were daily wage-workers and were returning to their home in the slums, right next to the Jogeshwari tracks on its west side.
“The family had walked from Borivali towards Jogeshwari for 200 metres after which they were crossing over to their slum home,” said a government railway police officer.
The family was taken by bystanders to Janshatabdi Hospital. The father of the four-year-old Muneer Marsola said that he had taken care to keep his son by his side throughout the day and only let him go home with his brother-in-law Santosh. “I had let him go home with Santosh and asked him to leave my son with my wife,” he said.
A case of accidental death has been registered with the Jogeshwari GRP.
