3 dead, 2 hurt in Freeway accident

Three motorists died on the spot and two others were injured in an accident that took place on the Eastern Freeway on Tuesday morning.

Three motorists died on the spot and two others were injured in an accident that took place on the Eastern Freeway on Tuesday morning. The RCF police has registered a case against the owner of an Innova who could not control his car and rammed into a taxi in which the victims were travelling. The driver of the speeding car also succumbed to his injuries.

The accident occurred around 8.50 am, on the Eastern Freeway near the Wadala exit. According police officials, the driver of the Innova was speeding and lost control after which his car jumped the speed breaker and rammed into a taxi. A Swift Dzire car behind crashed into the Innova.

DCP Shahaji Umap said, “It was the Innova driver's fault as he was speeding and could not control the car at a speedbreaker. Two persons travelling in a taxi died, while two from the Swift Dzire are injured. Our officers immediately took them to Sion hospital where they were declared dead and the bodies were later handed over to their families. We have registered a case under Section 304(A) against the Innova driver (deceased) on the complaint of Mahesh Kuklekar, an injured in the accident. The injured persons were rushed to Shatabdi Hospital in Chembur.”

The deceased have been identified as taxi driver Abdul Hamid Mehmood Sidhwa (48), passenger Vijay Madhukar Kelkar (50) and Innova driver Nandlal Jaiswal (42). Sidhwa and Kelkar were residents of Thane. Due to the accident, the Eastern Freeway was jammed for almost two hours, informed traffic police officials.
