In a 25-year-old murder case in suburban Diva, the Thane crime branch unit-1 arrested an accused on Friday. Anil Choube (48) has been arrested from Uttar Pradesh after the police received a tip off about him. Choube was wanted in many other criminal cases as well and the police managed to track him from Auria village.
“Vijay Singh alias Anil Ramsagar Choubey (48) was arrested from Auria village in Uttar Pradesh after a long chase. Choubey was wanted for the murder of a gangster Balaram Mhatre who was shot dead on March 16, 1990 inside his house while he was sleeping,” said Nagesh Lohar, ACP crime branch.
The police received information that Choubey was spotted in Auria village of UP and the prime accused was with one other accused. Hence, a team was dispatched to UP and Choubey was arrested while the other accused managed to give the crime branch officers the slip.
According to sources, Mhatre was a member of Govardhan Mahtre’s gang (Gourya dada) and his murder was an act of revenge by rival gang Ramchandra Bhagat (Pintya dada), in the Diva suburb.
“Govardhan Mhatre was murdered at Aradhana theatre in 1980 while deceased Balaram Mhatre gave a contract to kill Pintya dada who was shot dead by Dawood Ibrahim’s henchmen at Retibunder road. Hence, to eliminate Mhatre, Choubey was hired who worked as a security guard and Mhatre was shot dead on March 16, 1990,” said an officer.
A Sena MLA who was then a corporator was arrested in the case but was let-off due to insufficient evidence against him. The accused was produced in the court and has been remanded to police custody till January 4 for further investigation.
