The Dongri police of south Mumbai along with a special police team of the Uttar Pradesh police on Saturday arrested a 21-year-old youth in connection with the alleged kidnapping of a 16-year-old UP-based girl. The girl was kidnapped on March 2, the police said.
The accused has been identified as Mohammad Ashiq Mohammad Shabbir Ansari alias Munna (21), a resident of Dana Bunder area in Dongri. The girl stays with her family in Beharaich area of UP. The accused also hails from the same area and was known to the complainant family. The victim is a Class 9 student. On the day of the incident she had gone to give her exam in the morning, but had not returned by evening. Her parents filed a complaint with the local Jarval police station.
The parents later started getting calls from various numbers warning them not to approach the police and threatening they would kill the girl otherwise. Following this, officials registered a case of threatening and kidnapping against unknown persons. Ashiq was later traced to Dongri. A police team came to Mumbai and nabbed Ashiq from his house, while also rescuing the victim, who was also found there.
The accused was produced in the court and sent in transit remand till May 25. He will later be sent to UP where the case of kidnapping is registered against him. The girl was sent for a medical test and officials will later decide whether to apply any other section on the accused (if the girl was raped or assaulted).
