A 21-year-old man, accused of kidnapping and raping a minor girl, has escaped from the custody of Adharwadi district central jail authority Tuesday morning. The Central police station in Kalyan area has registered an FIR against the accused and is looking for him.

“The accused who is identified as Atul Salve, was under judicial custody. He managed to escape from the custody of the police when he came for a health check up to the Central Hospital of Thane.

Salve was arrested by the Ulhasnagar police for eloping with a minor girl after promising to marry her. The girl was just 10 days short of turning 18,” said an official from the Central police station.

“The accused had constantly complained about his health. On Monday, he started vomiting, so the jail officials decided to take him to the hospital Tuesday morning. On Tuesday, Salve along with two more accused, identified as Nadir Naushad Ali (51) and Vijay Subhash Dete (25) were brought to the Central hospital on Tuesday. He was brought to ward number 17 of the OPD of Central Hospital. Salve then shoved aside the three officials and bolted. The three officials were unable to trace him and so lodged a complaint with the Central police station,” said the official.

“A case under section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) and 317 has been registered,” said senior PI A.V. Saigaonkar.

Police teams have been formed to trace him. “After investigation we will decide whether to take action against the officials who accompanied him,” said Mr Saigaonkar.
