A 20-year-old youth fell to his death from a height of 22 feet while repairing a temple in Jogeshwari (west), following which the Oshiwara police on Friday arrested the site supervisor for allegedly failing to provide him safety gear, which could have saved his life.
According to the Oshiwara police, the incident occurred at around 2.30 pm on January 2 in Gulshan nagar area in Jogeshwari. The deceased youth, identified as Sohan Yadav alias Pitu, a carpenter by profession, was carrying on the repair work with four other labourers.
They were on the ceiling laying slabs when Yadav slipped and fell down. He suffered grievous head injuries and was rushed to Cooper Hospital where he was declared dead. An accidental death report was taken down and further probe revealed that the supervisor was at fault. The youth is from Kolkata and had come to Mumbai in search of work. His ailing parents survive him. His cousin spent a huge amount of money to get his body back to Bengal.
“We have booked Ajay Singh (40) for causing death due to negligence under Section 304 A of the IPC. He should have provided safety gear and a safety net at the site, which would have averted the incident. We are probing to see if anyone else is at fault,” said senior police inspector Subhash Khanvilkar of the Oshiwara police station.
