A sessions court in Mumbai on Thursday convicted and sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for opening fire inside builder Mahish Dholakia’s office, which resulted in death of Dholakia’s security guard.
The prosecution’s case is that two persons had barged into Dholakia’s office at New Marine Lines in February 2011 and all of a sudden took out a revolver to shoot Dholakia, who dodged the bullet while security guard Ajit Yerunkar tried to catch hold of one of the assailants who fired at him. Yerunkar was taken to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries during medical treatment.
The Mumbai police as well as different units of the crime branch including the property cell swung into action and the two of the accused were arrested in a lodge in Ghatkopar and on their indication two more arrest were made.
During investigation the assailants were identified as Pravin Mishra and Abhishek Singh. Ramdas Rahane and Geetadas Jadhav alias Mauli are two other accused. The police further claimed that Mauli had provided weapon to Singh and Mishra and was waiting at a distance while the assailants had gone into office to target Dholakia.
According to the prosecution, the attack was carried out at the behest of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Anees and his aide Salim Chiplun. They had paid '5 lakh to Rahane out of which '3 lakh was for intermediary and the shooter while Rs 2 lakh was for Rahane.
Public prosecutor Nilima Kasutre examined around 50 witnesses to prove the case against the accused.
