The RAK Marg police in Central Mumbai have seized counterfeit notes worth Rs 3.05 lakh with the arrest of two persons. The notes look almost accurate to its original counterpart and it’s difficult for a common man to make out the difference, said an assistant commissioner of police. One person was arrested from Sewree and he spilled the beans on his partner, who was traced and arrested from Surat.

According to the RAK Marg police, the first accused had come to Mumbai last month and was trying to circulate a fake Rs 1,000 note. He recharged his phone for Rs 50 and paid the dealer with the fake note. The dealer caught his bluff and quietly alerted the police. The police officials rushed to the Golden Lottery and Mobile recharge shop in Sewree and arrested him.

The accused has been identified as Humayun Kabir Raysuddin Shaikh (19) and is a resident of Ghasipur village, Daulatabad taluka in Murshidabad district in West Bengal. “We checked his bag and found notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination. They were collectively worth Rs 1.43 lakh,” said assistant commissioner of police, Vijay Bagwe of Matunga division.

During interrogation, Shaikh named his partner Rajesh Abdul Razzak Shaikh and a special team sub inspectors Pravin Kalukhe and Dhananjay Devdikar traced him and arrested the second accused from Parbatnagar in Surat, Gujarat. He too was carrying counterfeit notes of a face value of Rs 1.43 lakh.
