Officials of online store Naaptol have filed a complaint against the director of Viral Technologies Pvt Ltd and CEO of web designing company Expert Thought, for allegedly copying the source code of their website because of which they have faced a loss of Rs 100 crore. After investigating the matter, the cyber crime cell unit of Navi Mumbai filed a complaint and arrested a former manager of Naaptol and the owner of another company in the case.

According to police officials, the main accused in the case was a manager with Naaptol.com two years ago. A few months earlier, he with the help of Viral Technologies Pvt Ltd sold the source code to Expert Thought who used it to create Best Deal TV and Big Deal TV websites by using data of the Naaptol website.

Both the Best Deal TV and Big Deal TV websites are owned by actor Akshay Kumar and Raj Kundra, husband of actor Shilpa Shetty.

Big Deal TV is an English 24/7 home shopping television channel, which is a free-to-air and was launched on June 28, while Best Deal TV is an Hindi-language 24/7 home shopping television channel that is also free-to-air and was launched on March 18.

Cyber crime cell SPI Pratibha Shendge said, “The main accused who was involved in giving the source code was a senior manger in Naaptol.com and was responsible for looking after the database, the website data and its source code. Although he had resigned from Naaptol, he sent data to Expert Thought with the help of Viral Technologies, and then the company robbed Naaptol’s data and source code to create the software for the channels.”

She added, “Work that could have taken four to five months to get completed was over within a few days with the help of the stolen source code.”
