1 dead, cop among 5 injured in accidents

Monday morning witnessed two accidents on the Bandra-Worli sea link (BWSL) leaving one dead and five critically injured.

Monday morning witnessed two accidents on the Bandra-Worli sea link (BWSL) leaving one dead and five critically injured. The second accident left a traffic constable injured after he was hit by a speeding car while diverting the traffic block caused due to the first accident.

The first accident occurred at 1 am when a speeding sumo rammed into an Hyundai i20 car from the rearside near pole number 80 of the sea link. “The accident took place at the Worli end of the sea link when both the vehicles were south-bound. The sumo turned turtle and rolled over a couple of times before coming to a halt,” said Vinayak Kulkarni, senior inspector of Worli police station.

The sumo was being driven by 24-year-old Sandeep Nagvekar and his friend Ankit Phondke (28) was sitting beside him. “The impact of the hit was such that Phondke was thrown out of the vehicle and hit his head on the metal railing of the sea link and died instantly,” said an officer.

Those in the other vehicle also suffered injuries and were identified as Vilas Navale, 23, Nikhil Dhotre, 22, Bhaven Patel, 23 and Ankit Pednekar, 24.

The police has arrested Nagvekar and booked him for rash driving.

Half an hour later, when the police and traffic police team reached the spot, another car hit a constable who was present to help avoid traffic jam due to the accident.

“After the incident was reported to the police, a team of Worli police reached the spot and so did traffic constable Sanjay More, 35, attached to Bandra traffic division. While the team was conducting the probe, constable More was helping with traffic regulation to avoid congestion and a speeding Lancer car with number MH02-JA-7710 knocked down More,” said Mr Kulkarni.

The car was again in the south-bound lane and the police nabbed the driver Dheeraj Sansare, 22, and booked him for rash driving. The police is yet to trace the owner of the vehicle.

While preliminary probe did not reveal much, the investigators say they suspect the drivers to be in an inebriated condition, which led to them to lose control of the vehicles. The police has submitted blood samples of both the drivers and are waiting for the medical reports to ascertain the same.
