Mumbai: In a bid to curb the rising cases of molestation of women in broad daylight by bike-borne men, the Mumbai police have deployed additional personnel and officers at four locations — Powai, Khar, Bandra and Andheri. These four areas have witnessed a rise in molestation case recently.

The police is also planning to deploy officials with bikes at these four places to nab the culprits.

Officials said that around 30 police personnel have been deployed at points such as Powai, Khar, Bandra and Andheri. The police personnel are monitoring these areas to tackle incidents of molestation or eve-teasing by bike-borne men.

The areas, usually near higher educational institutions are targeted the most by these ‘perverts’ who at times flash themselves, tease or pass a vulgar comment at girls. The police often receive complaints from the residents of these areas, and the police
personnel have been accordingly stationed there.

The police team is also planning to equip its personnel with motorbikes so that they can chase the accused.

If the police is able to nab the accused on the spot, it won’t have to go through the time-consuming process of checking the CCTV footage to identify the accused and find the registration number of the bikes.

Speaking to The Asian Age, Mumbai police spokesperson DCP Rashmi Karandikar said, “The plan of giving bikes to police personnel is still in the pipeline and has to approved by the senior officers, but once in finalised, it will turn out to be a big boon to the people as well as the police officials.”

A college-going Andheri resident, Hunaifa Ali said, “This will be of great help because recently when a flashing incident took place in Powai, it was horrifying for us to even look at people while walking on the road. If we know that there is a policeman nearby in any case of emergency, we will have some hope.”

Recent molestations

June 29: A rag picker was arrested for flashing at a woman and masturbating in Mumbai’s CST railway station.
July 13: Four girls were on their way home when a biker near the Galleria mall stopped them and started flashing at them.

Police’s plan to curb molestation

  • The police personnel will be stationed at notorious points and will be equipped with a motorbike.
  • The bike will help the police officials to nab the bike-borne accused on the spot.
