Mumbai: As a part of its pre-monsoon preparation work, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified 225 chronic flooding spots across the city. The number has increased by almost four times this year as compared to last year's figure of 66 chronic flooding spots. According to civic data, the eastern suburbs (88) have the highest number of chronic flooding spots, followed by western suburbs (74) and then the island city (63).

According to civic officials, the rise is due to the heavy rainfall on August 29 last year, as it brought forward some new chronic flooding spots in the city. The BMC has undertaken several remedial measures to ease water logging problem at these spots. “At Masjid Bunder, we have decided to install six flood control gates, whereas at Tardeo market, additional storm water gates will be erected. Additional access shaft will be constructed at Nana Chowk to reduce flooding. At Kajupada, Kurla, remodelling and construction of a drain has been undertaken, whereas drain augmentation will be carried out at Deonar Municipal Colony. While a nullah will be built at Devkabai Chawl, Ghatkopar, a culvert will be upgraded at Janta Market, Bhandup,” said a senior civic official.

Some of the major chronic flooding spots in the city include Milan Subway, the Hindmata Junction and Sion Road.
