Mumbai: The Mankhurd police has arrested an accused who fled to Uttar Pradesh eighteen months ago after the local police registered a case against him on the basis of a complaint lodged by his wife, accusing him of bigamy and theft of cash worth Rs 10 lakh and gold jewellery worth around Rs 55 lakh. The accused was brought from UP, where he was staying with his first wife, according to the police.

According to police officials, the accused identified as Chand Mohd Khan (42), who is a resident of Basti district in UP, is married to a woman and has three kids with her. He used to work in UP as a carpenter. He came to the city on August 8, 2016, and started living in Mankhurd’s Lallubhai compound where he befriended a 35-year-old woman. The two got married on October 10, 2016.

Assistant Police Inspector (API) Sanjay Totewad said, "After a few days of marriage, he told his wife to wear her jewellery as he wanted to take her around the city. Using that as a pretext, he went to her mother's house, stayed there the night and while she was sleeping, took all the jewellery. He took the gold from there and escaped. When he did not come back for a month, the wife lodged a complaint with the police on September 29.”

Senior inspector Sanjay Vernekar of Mankhurd police station said, "We got a tip-off that the accused is residing in his native place in UP. This week, we sent a team immediately to UP under the supervision of API Totewad with police constables Bagul, Sawant and Chande, which got him arrested. The stolen jewellery has also been recovered from him. He has been arrested under section 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) of the IPC. Investigation is underway."
