Mumbai: A 16-year-old schoolgirl committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan of her room in the family’s Goregaon flat. Her parents were away at the time of the incident. No suicide note was found from the house. The Bangur Nagar police is probing why the girl took such an extreme step.

A police officer told The Asian Age, “The incident came to light after family members of the deceased returned home from work late in the evening. Upon seeing the girl’s dead body, her parents started crying aloud, which alerted the neighbours, who in turn informed police.”

Another police officer said, “After doing the panchnama, we sent the body for post-mortem to the nearby Siddharth Hospital and the report is awaited.” Police sources said no suicide note was recovered from the minor’s house. Surprisingly, the deceased’s family members are not cooperating with the police and not giving any details related to the girl.

The victim stayed in a chawl in Bhagat Singh Nagar, Goregaon, with her mother, who works as a domestic help, her father, who is a daily wages labourer, an elder sister, and a younger brother. The deceased was studying in class X in a nearby government school.

On Wednesday evening, the deceased and her younger brother were at home while their elders had gone for work. When the sibling fell asleep, the girl allegedly hung herself from the ceiling fan with the help of her dupatta. The Bangur Nagar police has registered a case of suicide in the matter and further investigation is underway.

Sources informed this newspaper that the police suspect that either the girl was not faring well in her studies or was upset with someone in her family or friend circle. Keeping both angles in mind, the police is currently taking statements from neighbours.
