Mumbai: A certain Mr Forgetful left behind his mobile at a Passenger Reservation System (PRS) but later proceeded to lodge a complaint of his mobile being stolen from his pocket. In an incident that proves of how people tend to think the worst of every situation, the man filed the complaint on Thursday morning but when the Railway Police Force retracted his steps in the CCTV footage, they found that he had left it at the Thane PRS.

A Dombivli resident, Laxman Desai (45) had forgotten his mobile at the Thane station while waiting to book the train tickets to go to his native place. The exact location was later found to be a seat in the waiting area of the PRS counter. Upon reaching home and realising that his mobile was missing, he had approached the Thane GRP as a victim of mobile theft.

An official attached to the Thane GRP said, “He was extremely sure that his mobile was stolen from his pocket. In fact, he even specified that he felt that the theft was done somewhere between Diva and Thane.”

“But when one of our officials recovered the mobile from the PRS waiting area, we managed to unlock the phone and get in touch with Desai’s wife, who confirmed that the mobile had been stolen,” the official added.

In fact, the CCTV footage even showed Desai walking towards the counter and another person sitting nearby picking up the mobile and asking around if it belonged to someone in the area.

The phone was then handed over to the RPF. Desai had walked away from the waiting area without realising that his phone was missing.

Sachin Bhalode, senior divisional security commissioner, Central Railways said, “We usually don’t get such cases but this might be that one off case where the commuter genuinely felt robbed. We, of course, take every complaint seriously.”

The phone was approximately valued at Rs 10, 000 by Desai.
