Mumbai: There are around 28 lakh vehicles registered in the city, but the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) parking lots can accommodate only a few thousands, while the rest are given passes and tickets for on-street parking.

According to the BMC’s parking policy, the civic body charges Rs 1,800 per month for on-street parking, which residents feel is a lot and hence resort to parking in unauthorised parking spots.

Speaking to The Asian Age, A-ward assistant commissioner Kiran Dighavkar said, “We had implemented the pay and park policy in A-ward, which covers the Churchgate and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus area of south Mumbai, but residents have shown next to no interest, saying that the prices for the parking spot are too high.” Shivaji Rao, who supervises the Colaba parking lot built by the BMC said, “There are parking spaces near Hutatma Chowk and Mantralaya, but the capacity is way too low, and the ratio is 50 cars for 1 parking spot.”
