Mumbai: The Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for sharing the trailer of The Accidental Prime Minister, the adaptation of an eponymous book by Manmohan Singh’s former media advisor Sanjaya Baru, on Twitter.

The NCP said that the movie was made at the behest of the BJP to gain political mileage for the forthcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections. NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said that producer of the film is out on bail but was behind bars in a GST-related scam.

Maharashtra Youth Congress president Satyajeet Tambe said the party wanted to watch a special screening of the movie as the BJP has tweeted official trailer. On Thursday, Mr Tambe demanded that the special screening should be held for the party’s office bearers.

Meanwhile, Mohit Kamboj, Mumbai president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), termed the Youth Congress demands undemocratic, as they don’t have a faith into the constitutional institutions such as Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) that issued the certificate to the movie. Mr Kamboj has also said that the movie is based on the ten years irregularities of the UPA regime.

In a tweet, Mr Malik said, “Producer of the film is out on bail but was behind bars for  GST scam and his father is the ‘Nirav Modi’ of Mahara-shtra who is involved in a 9,000 cr scam where he has taken loans in the name of farmers by producing their fake identities. He also contested elections as a NDA candidate from Parbhani. They were arrested on complaints lodged by the NCP and are now out on bail. Both are supported by BJP and this movie is made out of scam money only to gain undue political mileage for BJP.”

Speaking to The Asian Age, Mr Tambe said, “It is a BJP’s campaign movie. So the people of the country would decide what the truth is and what is false.”

Mr Tambe also said that the BJP is trying to distract the focus from the core issues such as unemployment and Rafael deal. The movie was scheduled to be released in March or April but the BJP preponed the date of the release in January after the defeats in three states elections.
