MBMC under scanner for misuse of BPL funds

The additional civic chief, Madhav Kusekar did not rule out the possibility of more such cases coming to light.

Mumbai: Yet another case of financial irregularity has tumbled out from the closets of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC). This time a section of the senior officials from the Women and Child Welfare Development department are under the scanner for suspected irregularities while approving subsidies to women Self-Help Groups (SHG) operating in the twin-city. The matter was brought to light by social worker Gajanan Mhatre, who sourced out information under the Right to Information Act in context to irregularities, while awarding a subsidy amounting to Rs 2,99,810 to Navghar Mahila and Balke Vikas Gat for loan of Rs 8.56 lakh to set up a grain store. “Without verifying the present financial status of mandated Below Poverty Line (BPL) members in the SHG, the subsidy was given to a non-existent business proposal. Moreover to accommodate fake beneficiaries in the BPL scheme, resolution of the general body was forged ” alleged Mhatre. The additional civic chief, Madhav Kusekar did not rule out the possibility of more such cases coming to light.
