Mumbai: A week after the death of former Doordarshan (DD) anchor Kanchan Nath (57), her husband Rajat Nath on Friday approached chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to seek justice for his wife’s death due to alleged negligence on the part of BMC.

In the meeting with Fadnavis, Rajat demanded that a FIR be filed against the civic body. Rajat lost his wife on July 21, 2017 after a splintered coconut tree fell on her, crushing her to death. At the time, he demanded that a FIR be lodged but the police refused to comply, instead registering the case as “accidental death”.

After meeting the CM however, the latter assured Rajat that he would personally look into the matter in depth and see to it that the Nath family was compensated.

Presently, a probe has been initiated into the garden department of M west ward (Chembur west), the report of which is yet to be declared. During the meeting, Rajat put forth demands including lodging of a FIR against BMC, compensation for loss of life due to negligence, and registration of case against garden department officials.

Kanchan was out on her morning walk when the mishap occurred. A complaint had been registered by Chandrodaya society about the precarious condition of the tree in February this year however the civic body said that the tree did not pose any danger and simply cut its branches as part of the action taken. Further, a sum of `1,380 was charged to the society as cost of cutting the tree.
