Govt to probe crop insurance fiasco

Mumbai: The state government has ordered a probe into alleged irregularities in crop insurance in the Aurangabad and Latur districts. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis Friday told the state Assembly that action would be initiated against those found guilty.

Mr Fadnavis added that the government would also blacklist the company in question.

Mr Fadnavis was replying to the Leader of Opposition in the house Vijay Wadettiwar’s question whether the government would blacklist the company involved in the wrongdoing.

During question hour in the state Assembly, former deputy chief minister and NCP legislator Ajit Pawar and BJP legislator Atul Bhatkhalkar, among other members of the house, raised the issue of irregularities in the crop loan insurance scheme during the Rabi season.

In response, agriculture minister Anil Bonde said that during the Rabi season, sowing had taken place in Aurangabad on 2.68 lakh hectares of land only however crop insurance had been taken for 8.49 lakh hectares of land.

The minister added that sowing had taken place on 7.84 lakh hectares of land only in Latur but crop insurance had been taken for 13.14 lakh hectares of land.
