Mumbai; The Shiv Sena has demanded that the state should allow all legal activities, entertainment and celebration through the night on New Year's Eve. In this connection, Yuva Sena chief and Shiv Sena leader Aditya Thackeray wrote a letter to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday.

While making the demand, the Sena leader once again pushed forward his demand for a night life in Mumbai, stating that, “What is legal in the day, cannot be illegal in the night.” Meanwhile, state finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said that Mr Thackeray had not written any letter to him. “If I receive the letter, I will consider it and take an appropriate decision,” he said.

Mr Thackeray demanded that all major cities in Maharashtra should allow hotels and entertainment establishments to remain open all night on December 31.

In his letter to Mr Fadnavis, Thackeray has requested the chief minister to allow Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune and other such cities, that wished to be open all night for “all legal activities of entertainment and celebration,” especially in non-residential areas, on New Year's eve. He said that the move would create more employment and revenue from all safe and legal places.

He also reminded Mr Fadnavis of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation proposal, which was passed in 2013, and then approved by the then police  commissioner in 2015, and now legislated on by the state in 2017, to let non-residential areas in Mumbai and other cities be open 24/7. “The proposal for Mumbai is awaiting your approval from the home department for a few months now and is foolproof," the letter reads. “We need to trust our citizens and give them more space and time to unwind after work”.
