Mumbai: The state cabinet Thursday approved the extension of the metro 4A project from Kasarvadavali to Gaymukh.

The cabinet also approved an additional budget of Rs 949 crore for the project. The corridor is the extension to the 32km long Wadala-Kasarvadavali (metro 4) project.

The 2.7km long extension was approved in the meeting of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) earlier this year.

The extension will have two elevated stations i.e. Govanipada and Gaymukh. The extension will ensure connectivity along the entire Ghodbunder road.

Also, the authority is planning to make Gaymukh an interchange in order to provide seamless connectivity between the western and eastern suburbs. The metro depot for line 4 is expected to come up at Gaymukh itself.

Meanwhile, the corridor will also be extended towards the GPO in south Mumbai. The extension up to south Mumbai (metro 11) will be partially underground since the Mumbai Port Trust has demanded the same.

Nearly four to six km of the corridor passes through MbPT land. Part of the 14km-long metro alignment passes through the MbPT-owned eastern seafront, where the port trust wants the corridor to be underground.

According to MMRDA, the extension is expected to boost ridership from 8.7 lakhs to 10.2 lakhs by 2021.
