Mumbai: Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday compared the main Opposition party, Congress, to a sinking ship.

“Congress is a sinking ship and their chief Rahul Gandhi is a fleeing captain of that ship,” the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister said.

“After the debacle in the Lok Sabha polls, Congress leaders have started deserting the party. Rahul Gandhi has refused to stay as party president. Instead of resolving to bring the party up from shatters, he is choosing to run away from the battleground,” Mr Chouhan added.

The Congress should look beyond the Gandhi family. It always relied on one family. And now since that family is failing to deliver victories, their downfall has started, he said.

Mr Chouhan, the convener for the party’s nationwide membership drive, was in Mumbai to address district-level and regional-level heads of the membership drive. The drive will begin on July 6 and end on August 11.

“We are not satisfied with the emphatic victory in the Lok Sabha elections. The best is yet to come. Notwithstanding our success, we want to win in West Bengal, Orissa, Telangana, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir,” he said.

Mr Chouhan said that the target of the drive is to increase the membership count by at least 20 per cent. Enthusiastic party workers have already resolved to increase the numbers by 50 per cent. It will be a “Sarvasparshi BJP Sarvavyapi BJP” campaign, he added.
