Mumbai: The Thane crime branch has initiated an investigation into extortion calls received by a land owner in Borivali in 2015. The land owner had allegedly received threat calls from fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Anees demanding money.

The Thane police has taken custody of Iqbal Kaskar, brother of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim in connection with the extortion case.

The case pertains to 38 acres of land parcel in Gorai worth around Rs 50 crore.

The rightful owner, Tony Lewis (85), who is also booked in the case, has approached the Bombay high court asking for the case to be quashed.

Lewis had been summoned by the Thane police for recording his statement in the case. However, he has appro-ached the Bombay high court seeking stay on the probe and also quashing of FIR against him.

“Till now Lewis has only claimed that he gifted the land to his daughters as he is old and the deal happened subsequently. We have summoned him and have also sought property documents from him,” said a Thane crime branch officer. The land was being bought by the complainant who made payment of Rs 2 crore in 2015. However, after he received threat calls allegedly from Anees, asking him to forget the deal and the money paid. Two other persons bought the land later.
