Mumbai: The Bombay high court on Friday directed the court-appointed monitoring committee appointed to submit a progress report on the installation of video conferencing facilities in courts across the state.  The high court had directed the installation of video cameras in order to connect the courts with jails so that trials are not delayed.

The division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Anuja Prabhudessai directed the court-appointed monitoring committee to submit progress report next month when the court would hear the public interest litigation again. The high court sought the progress report after hearing a suo-moto PIL based on a letter written in 2011 by Shaikh Abdul Naeem, an accused in the Aurangabad arms haul case. In the letter, Naeem claimed that he was not being produced in court due to lack of availability of police personnel to escort him.

The court was informed that so far video conferencing facilities have been installed in 248 courts across Maharashtra and only 187 courts are remaining. Nagpur, a constituency of which is represented by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, lags behind in connecting courts through video conferencing to the prisons. The court was informed that Nagpur needs maximum 33 Video conferencing installations and Solapur needs only eight installations. Public prosecutor Mankuwar Deshmukh told bench that earlier state used to install this facility using ISDN.
