Mumbai: A man stabbed to death his wife of six months, Nasim Bano Sheikh (40), before wounding himself with the same knife only to succumb to his injuries at Sion Hospital. Nasim has an 18-year-old daughter, Nushrat (name changed on request), from her first husband who died 13 years ago.

The police is yet to establish the reason behind the accused, Gulam Mohammad Abdul Majid Sheikh’s (52) murder of Nasim. However, Nasim’s sister, Mehrun Sheikh (43), claimed that the murder may have something to do with the dispute between the deceased couple over Nasim’s desire to give away her gold jewellery to Nushrat, who is slated to tie the knot on February 24 next year. A case has been registered at Chembur police station.

Nasim was found dead at 10am on Sunday while Gulam succumbed to his injuries at Sion Hospital the same evening. On Sunday morning when Nushrat came knocking at Nasim’s door, Gulam told Nushrat that her mother was taking a bath. When Nushrat returned ten minutes later, nobody answered the door. She panicked and entered from the exhaust vent only to find Nasim’s dead body along with Gulam, who was breathing his last. At the time Nushrat found Nasim’s dead body, six to seven tolas of gold were missing from Nasim’s person.

Senior police inspector of Chembur police station said, “The investigation is still underway but the accused, Gulam, has succumbed to his injuries after being kept in the intensive care unit (ICU) for a few hours.”

Nasim, a widow whose husband died 13 years ago, married Gulam in June this year without informing her family. She first introduced him as a driver, but later confided in her family that she was going to marry him. Gulam was already married with three children before marrying Nasim, with his eldest son being 25 years old.

Mehrun told The Asian Age, “Nasim was forced into marrying Gulam as he was threatening to ruin her life. Soon after their wedding, Gulam started mentally torturing Nasim for not buying anything new for the house and demanded that she invest the same money on him. He often fought with her over petty matters and questioned her character.”

Mehrun added, “Three weeks ago, Gulam fought with Nasim and abandoned her. When Nasim did not call him back, he realised she was gone for good, and he started begging for her forgiveness. On Nasim’s daughter’s birthday, Gulam got her a treat and tried to patch up, following which, Nasim took him back, stating she wanted her daughter’s wedding which was to take place in the month of February to go smoothly.”
