Mumbai: A day after three foreign nationals stole a Samsung smartphone from a shop in Mulund, the Navghar police apprehended them from Mahim and found them to be Iranian nationals. The trio comprises a father and his two daughters who had come to Mumbai for sightseeing. The officials are yet to ascertain the reason for their visit to Mulund and what prompted them to steal the mobile phone.

Identified as Mohammad Jafari (53) and his daughters Laila (37) and Zahara (24), the trio had been staying at Mahim. Officials said that they had come to India for medical reasons that are now being verified in detail.

The police began investigating after receiving the complaint pertaining to theft and found CCTV camera footage from an adjacent building, which was then circulated among informers who helped track the accused to Mahim. “A team went to Mahim and verified the trio’s identity and found that they were the same persons who had gone to Mulund. The police also found the stolen phone from their residence,” said an officer of Navghar police station. Officials seized medical documents and prescriptions and said that the trio was here for treatment. Posing as tourists, the accused committed the theft which the CCTV camera in the shop captured.

The owner of the shop Neel Mobile, Prakash Lohar, told The Asian Age, “The incident took place within just two minutes from 4.28pm to 4.30pm. When the man asked me about exchanging currency, I told him that we did not have the facility. The man kept me busy and one of the women asked for phone covers. She demanded more variety during which time the phone was stolen. They spoke in English.”
