Mumbai: “Jail Bharo” agitations will be held on August 27 against the Jaitapur atomic energy project at the project site. Residents from villages in the vicinity have appealed to the Shiv Sena to join the protest as the latter is also opposing the project.

Sena MP Vinayak Raut has demanded that the Jaitapur project be scrapped and land be returned to the farmers. He cleared that the Sena was always with the residents.

The Jaitapur atomic energy project is a priority project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has been delayed since the past few years. Land acquisition for the project was completed nearly two years ago but the residents have been opposing it. Now after the Nanar agitations, opponents of the Jaitapur project, too, have become active.

Mr Raut told The Asian Age, “The Sena is always with the residents and supporting the agitations. Now, the Union government is not much interested in the project as Areva has left the project. We are getting solar green power at the rate of Rs 2.5 per unit and we will get atomic energy at the rate of Rs 7 to Rs 8 per unit which will be very costly. Now the Union government should scrap the project and return the land to the farmers. We will write to Mr Modi.”
