Mumbai: The Bombay high court has rejected the bail application of builder Sunil Shitap who was arrested in connection with the Sai Siddhi building collapse in Ghatkopar on July 25, 2017. The order came as a major relief for survivors and relatives of the victims who are observing the first anniversary of the incident, which left 17 dead.

The court based its decision on the submissions of the prosecution and survivors who proved to the court that Shitap’s claims that he was not responsible for the collapse, as the workers had removed the pillars inadvertently which resulted in the collapse of the building, were false.

A division bench of Justice A.S. Gadkari had been hearing the bail application of Shitap and interior designer Ranjeet Angale both claiming that they did not have a role to play in the removal of the pillars and hence they deserved to get bail.

After hearing the arguments from the applicants as well as the prosecution and intervenors over a period of two months, the court finally held that a lot of serious complicity between the two accused had been brought on record and hence they did not deserve to be released on bail.
