Andheri rape case sees no progress due to no evidence
The police has not been able to gather strong evidence because there was CCTV footage to establish the alleged crime.
Mumbai: The police probe in the case related to the alleged rape of a three-year-old girl by the trustee of an Andheri school in 2016 has not seen much progress as no fresh complaint against him has come up despite the parents’ claims that they would.
The police, however, said it would act in accordance with the orders passed by the court. The police has not been able to gather strong evidence in the case allegedly owing to the fact that there were no credible witness or CCTV footage to establish the alleged crime.
Navinchandra Reddy, deputy commissioner of police (zone 10), said, “We had asked parents to come forward and register a complaint against the accused. However, the fresh complaints were not registered, and we could not build a strong case to keep the accused away from the school premises.” He said, “The parents had approached the high court, and we will comply with the court’s order.”
According to police sources, the trustee has resumed his duties and was back on campus earlier this year in February. However the parents, whose children were studying in the school, did not like the decision and approached the school authorities with a signed petition to revoke his employment as a trustee-cum-director. The latter simply asked the irate parents to look for another school. The school management also sent an email that stated that since the police has granted bail to the accused, he cannot be asked to leave.
When the parents did not see anything fruitful coming out from the authorities, they approached Mr Reddy to cancel the bail. Soon after that they knocked the court’s doors.
The case was reported on May 18 last year, when the girl confided in her mother about the alleged incident that took place in November 2016. The case picked up pace after the complainant filed a writ petition with the high court alleging that the police was dragging its feet, and on November 1, the HC directed the police to reinvestigate the case with a senior officer heading the probe.
