Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will start work on the Thane creek bridge from November 1, and plans to finish it by the end of December. The MSRDC only recently got permission from the traffic police to begin work on the Sion-Panvel highway at the Thane creek bridge.

According to a MSRDC official, work will be carried out phase-wise and will not affect vehicle mov-ement along the bridge. Vehicles headed from Mumbai to Pune will be allowed to ply along Thane creek bridge number 1. The officer said that only light motor vehicles will be allowed to travel on bridge number 1.

With the help of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai traffic police, the traffic has been diverted to help vehicles take Thane creek bridge no 1 and MSRDC has asked vehicles to use this diversion, a turn, to reach Thane creek bridge number 1.

Recently, the Vashi bridge expansion project got the green signal from the ministry of environment and forests and the national board for wildlife. The project is officially known as Thane Creek bridge no. 3, and CIDCO is a joint stakeholder in it.

Permission has been granted to clear mangroves and trees at the Mankhurd and Vashi ends of both the Pune and Mumbai carriageways.

As per the board, two per cent of the proposed cost of the project, which passes through the Thane Flamingo Sanctuary, will be deposited with the mangrove and marine biodiversity conservation foundation of Maharashtra.
