Govt grants Sindhi camps freehold right on land

Such land needs prior permission from the government to create any third party interest.

Mumbai: The state government decided on Tuesday to grant freehold rights on the land given to Sindhi migrants, who had come to India from Pakistan during Partition. The decision will benefit settlers of 30 Sindhi camps across the state.

The government classified the land allotted to Sindhi migrants until now as class-2 land, which was only for residential purpose and was non-transferable.

Lakhs of people from Pakistan’s Sindh came to India after Partition for whose rehabilitation the Union and state governments allotted funds and land. The Maharashtra government allotted lands for camps at 30 places under government lease lands class 2. Such land needs prior permission from the government to create any third party interest.

Residents of such camps have been demanding the conversion of these lands into class 1 category, which gives landowners freehold rights of ownership.

The state Cabinet has taken the decision now, some of these lands have already been developed and third-party interests created, a senior official said.

Meanwhile, the government is yet to decide on the demand of 20,000 cooperative societies across the state and 3,000 in Mumbai which are on government lease land in class 2 category for a change of category.
