Mumbai: While the Supreme Court on Tuesday mandated that only green firecrackers will be allowed to sell during all festivals, firecracker sellers in Mumbai have too welcomed the move, but will little scepticism.

A walk down to the lanes of Mohammed Ali road revealed that sellers have already started preparations for Diwali. While some of the sellers said that they are happy with the Supreme Court order as they already have firecrackers that emit reduced fumes and decibel levels in stock, some feel that the warning by the Supreme Court is too late.

“We have been using the firecrackers that are known to produce less noise and air pollution. The state always carry testing of firecrackers before Diwali, last year we took the ones that had permissible noise. We are repeating the same ones this year too,” said Mahesh Parma, a firecracker seller at Mohammed Ali road.

Meanwhile some sellers also fear loss in sales as they have Chinese firecrackers in stock. “Most of the sellers here have Chinese fire-works in stock, which are available to us in cheaper rates. But we are not sure whether they create fumes and noise within the permissible limit. All of it will be of no use if they are banned and our profits from the sell will be severely affected,” said another seller requesting anonymity.
