Mumbai: The Mumbai crime branch arrested nine persons following raids at 11 shop establishments for dealing in duplicate products affixed with the Gillette brand name. The property cell of the crime branch found that the accused persons were selling sub-standard Chinese products under the Gillette brand name. The investigators have seized large quantities of fake products from the establishments at Crawford market and Andheri.

Owners of the Gillette brand, Proctor and Gamble, had lodged a complaint with the D.N. Nagar police station in Andheri after they found fake products flooding the market and resulting in heavy losses for them. They also stated that the inferior quality of these products was damaging the brand’s reputation and image.

The case was handed over to the crime branch for investigation, which found out that the accused had been storing these fake products at 11 shop establishments in Andheri and south Mumbai. The property cell of the crime branch carried out searches at these locations and seized the fake products.

Those arrested have been identified as Pankaj Nisar, 37; Pankaj Jain, 38; Mangilal Chaudry, 37; Badar Shaikh, 23; Nasir Shaikh, 25; Iftekar Aalam, 22; Tabrez Shaikh, 21; Mohammad Shaikh, 44; and Pravin Phulwala, 62.

“The arrested accused are the shopkeepers who stored the fake products that were imported from China. They also sold these products in the market,” said a crime branch officer. They have been booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Copyrights Act and the Trademark Act and have been handed over to the D.N. Nagar police station.
