Mumbai: This year there would be no loud New Year parties in the serene forest of Yeoor hills, Thane. The Vartaknagar police station has issued notices to the bungalow owners that no loud music or celebrations will be allowed in the area at any time of the day.

Noisy parties in the bungalows that are rented out for celebrations often interrupt the eco-sensitive zone, which is home to tribal hamlets.

The tribal community and environment activists have time and again asserted that noisy parties and blaring music system disturb the eco-sensitive area that is usually filled with the chirping of various bird species. “We have sent notices to the bungalow and hotel owners regarding the ban on using loud speakers, DJs. Strict action will be taken against those who do not abide. While the revellers can enjoy celebrations, it has to be at par with the eco-sensitive area,” said Pradeep Girkar, senior police inspector, Vartaknagar police station.

The offence will be booked under section of the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules 2000.

Notices have been issued to 75 bungalows and hotel operators. Villagers have welcomed the move and asserted that they will also lend their support.

“The owners rent out the bungalows for parties that are often go on till wee hours. The Yeoor hills have been declared as an eco-sensitive zone and should not have exposure to the blaring music which drive the birds away,” said Rohit Joshi, a Thane-based activist.
