Mumbai: The Charkop police cracked a house break-in case and arrested two persons with six kg gold that was stolen from the jewellery making unit. The police said that the accused persons tried to set the unit on fire, with the workers sleeping inside, after looting the valuables to conceal the theft and flee from the spot.

The arrested accuseds were identified as Sharif Shaikh (20) and Karamat Shaikh (19), who are brothers. They hatched the plan after working in the unit for a few months. The accused had fled to their native place in Bihar after committing the theft. The police are on lookout of their accomplices who were also workers in the unit and part of the theft.

“When the unit was set ablaze many workers were asleep inside. The accused wanted time to escape and hence set it on fire,” said Sangramsinh Nishandar, deputy commissioner of police (zone XI).

“The duo wanted the attention to be diverted to the fire and not theft, which they pre-planned,” police said.

After the theft, they kept their phones switched off and disposed their current SIM cards to avoid getting tracked. However, they came on the police’s radar owing to their vanishing act and police began trailing them, which led the officials to their native place.

Several police teams were formed to find them and the officers scanned several cities including Karnataka, Gujarat and Hyderabad before finding them at a hotel in Bihar’s Aurangabad.

It later came to the fore that they had changed many locations over the period before setting foot in Bihar.
