Mumbai police take action against 11 constables

Mumbai: The Mumbai police has informed the Bombay high court that it has taken action against 11 police constables who were allegedly demanding bribes, and that an inquiry is underway against another eight constables suspected of indulging in corrupt practices. The submissions were made by the police in the criminal public interest litigation (CrPIL) filed by former head police constable, Sunil Toke, about rampant corruption in the force. The court has directed police authorities to keep watch over these constables and sensitise the public about their role.

A division bench of justices Naresh Patil and Nitin Sambre was hearing submissions made by the police regarding action taken by them against the corrupt police constabulary. Additional public prosecutor Prajakta Shinde, while reading out the “action taken” report filed by the police said that in all, 109 complaints had been received against the constables. 38 complaints were pertinent and action had been taken against 11 constables based on these complaints. She said that five constables had been suspended while disciplinary action in the form of stoppage of increments had been initiated.
