Mumbai: In a move to provide an opportunity to a large chunk of Mumbai’s working population to get a degree, the University of Mumbai (MU) has mooted a plan to set up night colleges in the city. The plan was proposed before the university’s senate during a discussion on the perspective plan for the next five years — 2019-20 to 2023-24.

A survey was conducted to get suggestions form MU’s stakeholders i.e teachers, students, among others to determine the upgradation need by the varsity to improve. The survey conducted as per district wise analysis concluded stating a hug demand for the night colleges.

A senate member said, “There is a need of women’s colleges and night colleges for working youths and hence the perspective plan proposes to establish such colleges in Mumbai and the suburban areas.”

Pro vice-chancellor of MU, Dr. Ravindra Kulkarni presented the plan to the senate members who approved the plan on Saturday.

“Though we have approved the plan, there are several drawbacks to it. We have asked the varsity to work on that so that it is completely beneficial for the students of the university,” another member of Senate said.

Apart from night colleges, the analysis has suggested introduction of more women’s colleges and law colleges in the city. Colleges with courses like fine arts, skill development, architecture, pharmacy and professional courses are also in demand. The varsity is also planning to set up an institute for travel and tourism courses.
