Mumbai: Police have arrested a rickshaw driver after an alert school girl jumped off his vehicle at a traffic signal as he refused to stop when demanded.

The student of a BMC school on way home became alert after the driver offered her wafers and water, which she declined, and asked the driver to stop, according to the police, who have filed a case under the Prevention of Child Sex Offences Act (POCSO).

The girl fled the rickshaw when it stopped at a signal near the Family Court at the Bandra Kurla Complex, wrote down its number and sought help from a private security guard, who informed the girl’s father of the incident.

According to the complaint, the father of the victim received a phone call from an unknown number. The caller identified himself as a security guard of a building in BKC and said his daughter had approached him after jumping from a rickshaw.

The father lodged a complaint with the BKC police. The police traced the rickshaw owner and arrested driver Jitendra Kumar Singh (33) from his residence in Nallasopara.

When police produced Singh at a special POCSO court, Singh’s lawyers R.U. Jha and Monica Narayankar contended that none of the section imposed by police is applicable in this case. After hearing the arguments, special judge Rekha Pandhare remanded Singh to police custody until April 24.
