Mumbai: A Delhi resident (24) has been arrested by the Mumbai police for conning an 89-year-old Chembur resident. The accused, posing as an insurance company executive, duped the older man of around Rs 12 lakh over a period of two years, the police said.

Rajeshwar Nath (89) registered a complaint with the Govandi police a couple of months ago. On Tuesday, the Mumbai police brought the accused, Rajat Prakash (24), a resident of Shakarpur, New Delhi, to the city, booking him for fraud and impersonation. Prakash confessed to all the allegations leveled against him in the complaint.

A police official said, “According to the complainant, he got calls from a call-centre, informing him about the benefits of a particular investment scheme of a well-known insurance company. Accordingly, the senior citizen kept on investing for two years, giving away a sum of Rs 1,184,000.” The official added that it was only when he did not get the promised returns that Nath suspected something was amiss and lodged a complaint.

The police tracked the account to which all the transfers had been made by Mr Nath. They tracked it to Delhi, zeroing in on Shakarpur eventually. “We had CCTV footage of the accused using a credit card associated with the said account. After we brought him to the city and interrogated him, he confessed to being a part of the con,” said another official of the Govandi police.

The police suspect that Prakash is just a cog in a major con operation going on across the country. It has identified another Delhi man, who may lead it to the bigger players in this racket.
