No pilot trial doomed OSM system: MU source

The source, while supporting his contention, cited the example of Nashik's Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University.

Mumbai: While the online ‘On Screen Marking’ (OSM) system has copped the blame for contributing to the delayed assessment of Mumbai University’s final-year exam papers, its failure could also be attributed to the fact that its efficacy had not been ascertained by deploying it in pilot projects, said a senior university source.

The source, while supporting his contention, cited the example of Nashik’s Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, which used the OSM successfully in 2015 to assess 5.5 lakh graduation (ATKT)-PG exam papers. But, unlike in the case of the MU, YCMOU had first tested OSM in three pilot projects before using it formally.

MU’s new acting controller of examinations (CoE) Arjun Ghatule, who is also the CoE of YCMOU, said, “In March 2015 YCMOU conducted its first pilot project and continued to have another two pilot projects. After that, in the month of November and December 2015, we carried out our first project of answer sheets.”
