Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sought the state government’s approval to allow corporators to use their funds for the distribution of cloth bags in their wards. In a bid to promote the use of alternatives for banned plastic carry bags, corporators had demanded that they should be allowed to distribute cloth bags through their civic funds.

Additional municipal commissioner Vijay Singhal said “We have given a positive remark for the proposal, which has been sent to the state government for approval. It will be implemented after getting the state government’s sanction.”

The proposal to use corporators’ funds to distribute cloth bags has been made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Jaya Tiwana. “To provide an alternative for banned plastic carry bags, a provision of Rs 5 lakh should be made in the corporators’ funds for the distribution of cloth bags,” she had said in her proposal.

“Instead of levying fine, an alternative for plastic bags should be provided,” said Mrs Tiwana.

“The proposal is good. But it should not be misused for corrupt measures or to allot contracts to agencies connected to corporators only,” said civic activist Mahendra Hemdev.
