Manmat wasn’t depressed: Kin

Mumbai: Two days after 18-year-old Manmat Mhaiskar jumped off the terrace of Dariya Mahal in South Mumbai, the Malabar Hill police is still ascertaining what could have triggered the drastic act. According to the police, Manmat’s parents, both senior bureaucrats, say they are as clueless as the cops and that Manmat never stayed aloof or depressed for them to know there was something wrong.

Manmat died on Tuesday after jumping off the 20th floor terrace of Dariya Mahal in South Mumbai.

The police said that since his parents are in shock, the family’s statement would be taken later. Currently, statements are being taken from Manmat’s friends. The police is checking his Call Data Records and questioning his friends in Mumbai.

The police is also questioning Manmat’s friends who were studying with him in St Xavier’s College to know if any of them was in touch with the deceased. The police is probing if Manmat was going through any mental tension.

The police has not yet spoken to his parents as they are in trauma, but the after the incident came to light his parents said they never knew he was under some kind of pressure or depression. Manmat, who was pursuing a law degree in a Pune’s Symbiosis College, did not spend time with his friends on Sunday when he came back to Mumbai as he usually used to do.

Deputy commissioner of police, zone 2, Dnyaneshwar Chavan said, “We will be questioning his friends in the building and college, but we are not sending any teams to his Pune-based college as of now. Since his parents are bearing a huge loss, we will take their statement after they recover from the sudden demise of their son.”

Manmat had sustained severe head injuries in the fall and was declared dead on arrival at the state-run JJ Hospital.

The Malabar Hill police has registered an accidental death report and is probing the case.
