Mhada recovers Rs 3.81 crore in four days after PM’s masterstroke

Mumbai: Barely a week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ban Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) has collected Rs 3.81 crore in four days from defaulters following the Centre’s demonetisation move.

The Mhada had on November 11 announced that it will accept Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes for accepting dues from the defaulters who are yet to pay their property tax to Mhada, transit camps rent, service tax, water and electricity charges.

"We have collected Rs 3.81 crore between November 12-16. The amount that we have collected is from the Mumbai, Konkan, Nagpur, Nashik, and Aurangabad board," said, Mhada in a statement on Friday.

The Mhada has also extended the dates of collecting old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes till November 24.  Earlier, Mhada had also conducted a massive collection drive where it had sent notices to all the defaulters asking them pay up their dues or face action under the Mhada Act.

Homes for mill workers
The Mhada has also announced that it will conduct lottery for allotting 2,417 homes to mill workers. The homes are located in Panvel and were constructed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) under rental housing scheme. However, it was later decided by the state government to allot the homes to the mill workers. The homes are going to be priced at Rs 6 lakh and measure 320 square feet. The last lottery of mill workers was conducted in 2012.
