Mumbai: Several city-based milk retailers have said that, despite the ongoing state-wide milk producers’ agitation, the dairy supply has been normal, and there has been hardly any impact. To deal with the agitation, the state government has been sourcing milk from Gujarat. As milk tankers have struggled to reach Mumbai via roads in certain districts, the state government is managing the milk supply via trains. Almost 88,000 litres of milk from Gujarat reached Mumbai on Wednesday and the same is expected till Thursday night.

A senior officer of Western Railway (WR) on the condition of anonymity said, “Milk tankers were brought to city in early morning by train. The supply of milk will continue uninterrupted to city.”

“The strike has led to change in the milk brand we receive for selling. Initially, we used to get milk packets from the Varai brand but now the suppliers replaced them with Amul packets today. Thus, there has been a continuous supply of milk and no stoppage,” said Ritesh Gala, a shop owner from Wadala.

“We are receiving milk packets regularly, and has been no effect due to the strike. We are being supplied the same brand,” said Bhavesh Nagar, a shop employee from Goregaon.

Commenting on the matter, dairy development commissioner Rajendra Jadhav also claimed that the ban hasn’t impacted the city and the collection and supply has been the same since the strike.

In light of threats by the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana to cut the milk supply to Mumbai city. Looking at the situation, the state government has ensured the smooth supply from Gujarat to Mumbai. So, milk tankers and special bogeys in trains were arranged from Ahmedabad and Surat to Mumbai. The supply of Amul milk, a famous brand from Gujarat, has consequently increased in Mumbai and Pune.
